Art of the Sale: Persuasion and Influence Tips for Development Professionals (and Everyone Else!)

Faculty, Management and Leadership of Organizations, Cornell University's S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management

Risa Mish is a member of the Management and Leadership of Organizations faculty at Cornell University's S.C. Johnson Graduate School of Management, where she teaches courses in team leadership and critical and strategic thinking, and serves as Faculty Director of the Johnson Leadership Fellows program, as well as Faculty Advisor to the Johnson Board Fellows, Black Graduate Business Association, Human Capital Association, and Cornell Varsity Women's Lacrosse Team.

Professor Mish is an honors graduate of Cornell University and Cornell Law School, and is admitted to practice law in New York and before the U.S. Supreme Court. She runs a leadership and human capital consulting firm and serves as a keynote speaker and workshop leader at national and global conferences. Before joining Cornell faculty, she worked in Alumni Affairs and Development at Cornell, including as a Major Gifts Officer for Cornell Law School. 

Her keynote address, Art of the Sale, is designed to help participants become more persuasive and influential in their professional and personal lives.

Nearly all significant individual, team, and organizational development goals are achieved because of an ability to influence the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors of key stakeholders, including prospective donors. That ability, in turn, hinges upon the degree to which the persuader/influencer is:

(a) Perceived as credible

(b) Able to make a logically sound argument in support of the proposal

(c) Able to create and maintain a genuine and positive emotional connection with the persons whom he/she is trying to influence and persuade

Art of the Sale will focus on these core components to aid in the development of attendee's persuasive powers.
