Tom graduated summa cum laude from Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg, Md., with a bachelor’s degree in history. He went on to receive a master’s degree in history from the University of Scranton where he was presented the Graduate Student History Award. He joined the staff at Lafayette College in 1997, leading the research office during the college’s $213 million capital campaign. Previously, he served as associate director of development research at Drexel University in Philadelphia; assistant to the superintendent of schools for the Ridgefield Park School system in New Jersey; and a grant writer/researcher for Centenary College, also in New Jersey. Tom is a regular speaker on a variety of research topics. He recently completed serving a second term as President of PREP/APRA, the Eastern Pennsylvania Regional Chapter of APRA (http://www.prepapra.org/). In 2007, he was the recipient of APRA’s Margaret Fuhry Grant and in 2010 he was awarded the CASE “Faculty Star” designation. (This designation places the speaker in the top echelon of CASE faculty in three categories: knowledge of subject matter, presentation skills, and ability to respond to questions.) In September 2010 he will begin a three-year term as a Director of APRA International, and he will serve as a member of the Nominations and Leadership Development Committee of the board.

Having been in the development profession more than 20 years, Hodan Hassan has a demonstrated record of building prospect development operations and teams in support of comprehensive capital campaigns at large public and private universities.
Previously, Hassan was the Senior Director of Research and Prospect Management at Arizona State University Foundation and Associate Director of Development Research at the University of Washington in Seattle. In Seattle, she led the research team and university-wide prospect identification efforts to support a $2 billion campaign. Hassan also held various positions at her alma mater, Long Island University, including Director of Development Services and Campaign Associate.
An active volunteer for APRA and CASE, Hassan was co-chair of the APRA 20th Anniversary Conference and has served in various leadership positions including president of APRA-Northwest; vice chair of the 2006 APRA International Conference; chair of the Prospect Identification Track and co-chair of the Professional Development Center for the 2005 APRA Conference. She is a frequent speaker on prospect identification, management and prospect research.
Hassan holds a master’s degree in applied mathematics and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics from Long Island University.

Board Position: Director
Karen Isble has led prospect management and coordination, research and performance reporting for the University of Michigan’s fundraising programs since joining the organization in 2006. Her team recently expanded to include analytics, and she also serves in a leadership role on the University’s development software implementation team. Karen has served in a number of roles over her 16-year career, including Administrative Director for the Chamber Music Society of Detroit and Director of Research for the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
A new member of the APRA Governance Committee, Karen previously served as a board member and communications director for APRA Michigan from 2007-2009, and is a former vice president of APRA’s Illinois chapter. She has presented at conferences for APRA, CASE V, APRA-Illinois, AFP-West Michigan, and has given presentations across the University of Michigan campuses for development staff, University leadership, deans and faculty. Karen holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University.

Board position: Treasurer
Kelly Johnson is the Managing Director of Development Operations at the Hazelden Foundation, where she provides project management consultation and direction to development and alumni relations leaders and staff. Johnson serves as a strategic consultant to senior leadership and development staff regarding privacy and confidentiality, departmental operations, data systems, prospect research and tracking and overall divisional planning. Previously, Johnson held positions as Manager of Prospect Information and Tracking and Research Specialist at the Hazelden Foundation.
Johnson is a member of AHP, CASE and has been an active leader and mentor with Toastmasters International, serving as President, Vice President of Education, Vice President of Public Relations and Vice President of Membership. She was awarded Toastmaster of the Year in 2006.

Deborah Reinhardt Youmans is Director for Advancement Research at Le Moyne College, where she also teaches a freshman elective, Philanthropic Perspectives: Generational Differences. On a pro bono basis, she serves as an independent consultant for small nonprofit agencies in the Central New York area. Before joining Le Moyne, she helped develop the Newspapers in Education Program at the Syracuse Newspapers and worked at a United Way affiliate. She is an APRA board member and serves on the Education/Professional Development, Nominations and Ethics committees. She is a member of the National Association for Fund Raising Professionals, Central New York Association for Fund Raising Professionals, National Committee on Planned Giving, and the Planned Giving Council of Upstate New York.
Reinhardt Youmans has been a presenter at numerous national, regional and local conferences for APRA, AFP, MARC, NEDRA and CASE, where she earned the faculty star rating. She has served as President of APRA-Upstate New York, board member for the New England Development Research Association, APRA 2008 Conference Curriculum Committee, MARC 2007 Conference Chair, NEDRA 2006 Co-Conference Chair, MARC 2006 Marketing Chair and APRA 2005 Research Fundamentals Track Chair. She holds an MBA from Le Moyne College and bachelor’s degrees in business administration and psychology from Columbia College.

James Rygg is the Senior Director of Development Research at the City of Hope, and has served in this role since November 2000. He oversees the prospect research and prospect management areas of Development. He has been in the development field since 1992. Rygg recently received the CARA Service Award in 2009.
Rygg served as President for the California Advancement Researchers Association (CARA), from 2004 to 2006. He also served as the Programming Chair for CARA’s 2003 Annual Conference, the Southern California Regional Chair from 2000-2002 and Membership Chair in 2003. He is also an active member of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) having served on the Nominations Committee in 2005. In addition, he also served as a Track Co-Chair in 2003, 2004, and 2005 for APRA’s International Conference and most recently served on the APRA Curriculum Planning Committee for APRA’s 2009 International Conference and APRA’s Technology Task Force Committee.
Rygg has presented on various research and development topics at CARA, APRA’s International Conference, the Planned Giving Round Table’s (PGRT) Western Regional and local Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) chapters.

Board position: Director
Karen Stitsworth recently became the special Assistant to the President of St. Olaf College. Before joining St. Olaf College, Karen was the Director of Development Research Services at Purdue University, where she led the daily operations of a team comprising seven prospect reserachers, an associate director for prospect management and tracking, an administrative assistant, department secretary and three to six student assistants. The department supported the information and prospect relations needs of 65 major gift fundraisers, while partnering with them to raise $1.7 billion with a $1.5 billion comprehensive campaign goal. The campaign was completed June 30, 2007. Stitsworth's career path has also included positions as a corporate attorney at the headquarters for a life and group health insurance company, and as an associate director of a law school library.
Stitsworth served seven years on the APRA-Indiana Board of Directors and held several positions including program chair, editor of the chapter newsletter, chapter secretary and nominations chair. She is a frequent speaker at APRA meetings on the state and international levels. Stitsworth co-chaired the Management Track for the 2003 APRA conference in Dallas, was co-chair for the Management and Professional Development track for the 2005 San Diego meeting, and conference co-chair for the 20th Anniversary Conference held in Chicago in 2007.
