Join us for MARC 2008, June 11-13, 2008, at Bucknell UniversityBucknell University is located in picturesque Lewisburg in the heart of Pennsylvania’s Susquehanna River Valley. What is there to do in Lewisburg while attending the MARC 2008 conference at Bucknell University?

  • Historic downtown is within walking distance of the Bucknell campus; and in addition to restaurants and shops, it also boasts the Campus Theater, coffee houses, museums, galleries and beautiful architecture to enjoy along the way. Some interesting shops include the Celtic Exchange, The Purple Platypus, Terra Sylvan, and the Merchantile.
  • Not afraid to drive a bit? Well, the regional antique shops abound, including the Silver Moon Antique mall and Corner House Antiques. You can make your own jewelry at Ellacinder's Bead Bar, visit regional wineries, or explore unique shopping and dining establishments like Country Cupboard.
  • In the mood for something a bit more adventurous? You can join the wild set by visiting Clyde Peelings Reptileland or T&D's Cats of the World. Visit Canoe Susquehanna to book a scenic paddle trip on the Susquehanna River. Or hiking, running - or just plain being outside is more your taste, consider the numerous regional state parks within easy driving distance.
  • Annual activities coinciding with the conference dates include Music in the Park at Huffnagle Park and the Summer Concert Series at the Silfer House - both located in Lewisburg. The committee is considering a trip to Knoebles Grove Amusement Park Thursday evening if there is enough interest. A movie night is also among the suggestions for entertainment Wednesday night. GETTING TO LEWISBURG, PA

Bucknell occupies the southeast corner of Lewisburg, bound on the east by the Susquehanna river and on the west by Route 15.

VIA AIRPORT
Scheduled airline service is available at the Harrisburg International and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton airports, while Allegheny Commuter (USAir) serves the Lycoming County Airport near Williamsport.

BY BUS

The most common driving routes are listed below. Please see Bucknell’s website for additional driving directions. (Travel times are approximate) 

From Harrisburg (About 75 minutes)
Take PA-283 W from the airport. Merge onto 1-283 N toward Harrisburg. After about 4 miles, I-283 N becomes I-83 N / US-322 W. Merge onto I-81 S / US-322 W via EXIT 51A on the LEFT toward CARLISLE / LEWISTOWN. Merge onto US-22 W / US-322 W via EXIT 67 toward LEWISTOWN. Stay on US-22 W / US-322 W for about 13 miles. Merge onto US-15 N toward SELINSGROVE. You’ll travel US-15 and US-11 north for about 40 miles. When Routes 11 and 15 split, stay on Route 15. About seven miles after Selinsgrove and Shamokin Dam, turn right at the traffic light for Bucknell and Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

From New York City (Three-and-a-half hours)
Take Route 80 West to Exit 210A for US-15 S. At the 11th traffic light, turn left for Bucknell and Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

From Pittsburgh (Four hours)
Take US-22 E to I-99 N / US-220 N. Take I-80 E to Exit 210A. Take US-15 South. At the 11th traffic light, turn left for Bucknell and Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.
Alternate Route: Take US-22 E to US-453, then US-45 E to US-15 S. At the next traffic light, turn left for Bucknell and Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.


PARKING

The designated parking area for MARC is on street parking along both sides of Moore Avenue, uphill parking at the Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium (near McDonnell Hall), and lot parking at the east end of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center.

Each dorm participant will be given a parking pass to hang on their rearview mirror upon dorm check-in.



MARC CONFERENCE LOCATIONS at Bucknell University: (See campus maps)

MARC Sessions and Workshops will be held in the ELAINE C. LANGONE CENTER. This will also be the site for the MARC Hospitality and Registration Center and Vendor Exhibition. Conference attendees and speakers are advised to check-in at this area starting Wednesday morning at 8:30 for complete conference schedule (location of workshops and sessions), give-aways and tote bag.

The Elaine C. Langone Center is located inside the campus at the corner of Moore Avenue and 7th Street.

MCDONNELL HALL is the location of dorm rooms for attendees who made reservations. McDonnell Hall is located inside the campus on Christy Mathewson Drive.

When visiting the 450-acre Bucknell campus, plan to spend time in historic Lewisburg, where you’ll find a variety of galleries and museums, unusual shops, coffee houses, and restaurants. Don't miss the gingerbread architecture, porches, carved wooden doors, and three-globed streetlights, all of which lend town an old-fashioned charm.

ARTS

The Weis Center for the Performing Arts (Bucknell campus)
Professional and campus music, dance, and theatre events, as well as lectures, convocations, and other functions are held in the 1,200 seat Weis Center, an architecturally striking and acoustically exceptional performance hall. The hall boasts two Steinway concert grand pianos, the lobby is home to a collection of watercolors by artist David Armstrong '69, and the building contains rehearsal rooms for Bucknell's large instrumental and choral ensembles.

Samek Art Gallery (Bucknell campus)
The Samek Art Gallery serves the students, the university community and region through innovative exhibitions and programming that focuses primarily on the art of our time; organizes diverse and interdisciplinary programming of noteworthy art, artists, scholars and critics from around the US and the globe; is open to the public seven days a week during the academic year, with the exceptions of university recesses and between exhibitions. Exhibitions and programming are free and open to the public.

Bertrand Library (Bucknell campus)
During the MARC 2008 Conference, the Bertrand Library is scheduled to feature "Rainmaker Editions: Fusion of Literature, Art, Craft." The rare, beautifully produced Rainmaker Editions fuse fine literature with visual accompaniments and superb craftsmanship. A gift of Brenda O'Boyle Griego, Class of 1988, to the Bucknell University Special Collections, these signed, limited edition imprints are meticulously constructed, designed, printed, and bound. Location: James A. Russell Exhibit Area, lower level 1, Bertrand Library.

Campus Theatre (downtown Lewisburg)
Prominently located on Market Street, the completely renovated Campus Theatre is one of the last authentic art deco movie houses in the world. Opened in 1941, the theatre continues to show quality first-run, independent, art, and foreign films.

Dale’s Ridge Trail is perhaps the best known and most popular of the Merrill W. Linn Land and Waterways Conservancy’s trails. It is located on the 137-acre Dale/Engle/Walker property along Strawbridge Road off Route 192 between Lewisburg and Buffalo Cross Roads. Dale’s Ridge is a geologically significant site, situated at the heart of the syncline that defines Buffalo Valley. The two-mile trail, which rises 160 feet above Buffalo Creek, offers breath-taking views of Buffalo Valley.

Koons Trail is located on a 28-acre conservation easement held by the Conservancy and donated by Mary Koons, Mifflinburg business owner and life-long resident of the County. The trail is a one-mile-loop that covers woodlands and open fields bordering Buffalo Creek near the Hassenplug Covered Bridge in Mifflinburg. An easy walk, ideal for beginners, younger children, and older adults.

Shamokin Mountain Trail near Winfield winds through private property and a portion of Pennsylvania State Game Land Number 193. This geologically and biologically significant area is comprised of meadows and second growth forests of mixed hardwoods and hemlocks.

Merrill Linn Trail, the most secluded of the Conservancy trails, is located in the Mohn Mill Pond area of Bald Eagle State Forest in northwestern Union County. The one-mile loop is an easy walk through a hardwood forest of red oak, red maple, and hemlock. While, the Linn Trail is an easy walk, the mountain roads accessing the trail may not be suitable for all vehicles

The park is in Union County on PA 192, 18 miles west of Lewisburg. R. B. Winter State Park covers 695 acres of the Ridge and Valley Province in central Pennsylvania. Located within Bald Eagle State Forest, the park lies in a shallow basin surrounded by rocky ridges covered with an oak and pine forest. The focal point of the park is Halfway Lake which is filled by spring-fed mountain streams and contained by a hand-laid, native sandstone dam. Open year-round, the park provides diverse opportunities for recreation including fishing, hiking, trail biking, and swimming.
