Access Conference Handouts Online

In support of APRA's commitment to sustainability, printed handouts for Thursday, Friday and Saturday concurrent educational sessons will not be available in session rooms. Instead, 21st Annual International Conference materials are available online for easy download. Conference attendees will receive unlimited access to posted session handouts.

Note: Delegates to Pre-Conference Workshops, New Researchers Symposium, and Management and Leadership Seminar will receive handouts onsite.

All registered attendees received instructions and personal login information August 1 in an e-mail from APRA headquarters.* To review conference presentations, visit the APRA Live Learning Center and click on the login link located in the upper right hand corner of the page. If you like, visit the site and print your handouts before leaving for Denver — or refer to handouts on the proceedings CD-ROM that will be included with conference registration materials.

Be sure to check the APRA Live Learning Center site periodically to review newly uploaded handouts.

*APRA executes speaker agreements with all presenters stipulating that session handouts belong to the presenters and can be distributed only as reference materials for registered conference attendees. APRA prohibits username/password sharing and distribution of handouts to non-attendees.

Update — Chronicle of Philanthropy to Hold Special Session

Digging for Gold: Survey Reveals Fundraiser Attitudes About Prospect Screening

Presenters: Dirk Rinker, President and CEO, Campbell Rinker
                       Peter Panepento, Web Editor,
The Chronicle of Philanthropy
Saturday, August 23
8:30am – 10:00am

The Chronicle of Philanthropy commissioned research firm Campbell Rinker to conduct an independent online survey focusing on the use of prospect screening tools, methods and services among Chronicle subscribers. The authors will hold a special session at the APRA conference to reveal the most surprising facts and findings of the survey, including:

  • How does using prospect screening products and services contribute to nonprofits' fundraising success?
  • What level of reliability and ROI do nonprofits — large and small — find from using these tools?
  • Are fundraisers using the data from prospect screening tools and services to its full potential?

New This Year!

  • Conference shuttle buses will run Wednesday, August 20 through Saturday, August 23 from The Brown Palace Hotel and Grand Hyatt Denver to the Hyatt Regency Denver, APRA's conference headquarters hotel. Check the daily schedule.
  • APRA is introducing two exciting track offerings — a Healthcare track for research professionals specializing in this industry, and Data Mining as a key component of the Prospect Identification track to explore emerging trends in prospect identification and data analytics — and presents a re-focused Member and Cause-Related Organizations track. Read more about the APRA track system.
  • Managers and directors will want to consider attending the new full-day Management and Leadership Seminar on Wednesday, August 20.
  • Sign up in advance for conference sessions — Reserve seating at the sessions you know you'll want to attend. Review descriptions in the Conference Sessions by Track section of the Web site, and confirm your selections on the conference registration form.
  • APRA supports national efforts to “Go Green” and is adopting an environmentally friendly approach to onsite conference materials. As a result, APRA will refrain from providing paper copies of handouts in each session.* Conference attendees can help this initiative by viewing handouts online before or after the conference — and referring to the complimentary CD-ROM of session handouts all attendees will receive in their registration bags.
*Workshops and symposia content are not included. Workshop and symposia attendees will receive traditional printed handout materials.
  • Because Denver does not provide public transportation between the airport and downtown, APRA will provide shuttle bus transportation between the Denver International Airport and APRA headquarters hotel. Registration for the round-trip airport shuttle service is now closed. If you're already signed up, read more about arrival and departure instructions.

Keynote Presentation

Why Giving Matters
Arthur C. Brooks, PhD

Giving and volunteering are often seen as merely resources to support charitable activities, and many nonprofit organizations see fundraising as little more than a necessary evil. But research has emerged showing that giving and volunteering are, in and of themselves, an enormous source of prosperity, health, and happiness for givers themselves. This presentation lays out the evidence that giving — and thus effective fundraising — are important sources of strength and vitality for individuals, communities, and our nation.

Arthur C. Brooks, PhD, is Louis A. Bantle Professor of Business and Government Policy at Syracuse University’s Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs and Whitman School of Management. He is also a Visiting Scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Brooks earned his doctorate in Public Policy Analysis from the Rand Graduate School in 1998, and also holds an MA and BA in economics.

Brooks has published approximately 100 articles and books about the connections between culture, politics, and economic life in America. He speaks frequently in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, and is a regular contributor to the Wall Street Journal, Condé Nast Portfolio, and other publications. His recent book about American charitable giving, Who Really Cares (Basic Books, 2006), was featured in national media outlets including ABC’s 20/20, The New York Times, Fox News, and National Public Radio. Brooks’ newest books include Gross National Happiness (Basic Books, 2008), and Social Entrepreneurship (Prentice-Hall, 2008). He now is working on a book titled The Virtue of Vice, scheduled for release in 2009.

Preceding his work in academia, Brooks spent 12 years as a professional French hornist, holding positions with the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra and other ensembles.
