David Lawson, DonorTrends

David brings more than 25 years of experience as an entrepreneur focused on the information needs of the philanthropic community. He is currently the President of Screening & Analytics for DonorTrends, a company offering actionable intelligence for fundraisers. In 1997, David founded Prospect Information Network (P!N) to provide prospect identification services and software to fundraisers.  P!N was acquired by Kintera in 2004 where he served as a Senior Vice President until 2008.  In the 1980s he founded The Information Prospector, a company that provided in-depth profiles of philanthropists.  In 1988 he introduced Securities Prospector, the first asset screening service for fundraisers. From 1993-97 David was a senior consultant with CDA/Investnet’s WealthID division, where he created their Real Estate MATCH product and designed the first dedicated wealth screening software application, FACT$Viewer. Most recently David co-founded WorkingPhilanthropy.com, a company providing eLearning experiences for fundraising professionals. David is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and has authored numerous articles for publications such as The Chronicle of Philanthropy, The Nonprofit Times, CASE Currents, and APRA Connections. David is a contributing author to Major Donors: Finding Big Gifts in Your Database and Online and People to People Fundraising: Social Networking and Web 2.0 for Charities. David is a Member of APRA, AASP, a CASE Steuben Apple Award and an APRA Distinguished Service Award recipient, and is the Co-founder of The WOW Institute, a training organization for fundraisers and philanthropists. David Eberly, Children’s Hospital Trust Boston

David Eberly has been in the fundraising profession for thirty years, dividing his time between higher education and health care.  He served as Director of Research at Tufts University, Director of Development Services at the Harvard medical School, and Director of Resource Development at Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government.  David returned to the research field in 2003 when he joined the Children’s Hospital Trust Boston in 2003 where he is Senior Director, Prospect Development.  In that capacity he oversees prospect research and analysis, prospect management, and HIPAA compliance.  He has also served as a consultant to numerous educational institutions, hospitals, and membership organizations.

David was promoted to his first managerial position at the age of nineteen.  Over the decades he has advised and mentored many research professionals to advance in the fundraising profession.  David has often been responsible for relationships between Human Resources and Development in many of his positions, and has served as advisor to a number of organizations seeking counsel on organization and staffing.

David is a past director of APRA, and chair of its Ethics Committee, and a past editor of Connections.  He is also a past president of NEDRA and the 2004 recipient of its Ann Castle Award.  David has presented on a wide range of topics including research, direct mail, prospect management, major gift fundraising, and ethics and compliance to professional organizations throughout the country.

An independent scholar, David is co-editor of Virginia Woolf and Trauma: Embodied Texts (2007).  He is currently engaged in a new study of the relationship between narrative and trauma as it pertains to doctor-patient relationship.

Cathleen Parsons-Nikolic, Villanova University

Cathleen Parsons-Nikolić is the Associate Vice President of Operations at Villanova University; a role that includes the management of the alumni database, the annual fund, gift and records administration, information technology, prospect research and management, special events, and stewardship. Prior to her move to Villanova, Cathleen was the Assistant Vice President of Development Operations at Temple University. Cathleen previously worked at the University of Pennsylvania and at the University at Buffalo. Before finding her way to advancement, Cathleen worked for OXFAM UK – Ireland. Based in Serbia, Yugoslavia, she studied the effects the U.S.-led economic sanctions were having on the Bosnian War refugees and women’s groups.

Cathleen is an active volunteer in professional organizations supporting the advancement community. She served as the co-chair for Council for Advancement and Support for Education (CASE)’s Institute for Senior Advancement Services Professionals last April. She has also chaired CASE’s Annual Conference for Development Researchers and has served as faculty for Academic Impression’s annual stewardship conference, as the chair for the Mid Atlantic Researchers Conference (MARC), as President of the Greater Philadelphia chapter of Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA), and was honored by CASE with the Rising Star and Circle of Excellence awards.

Cathleen has a bachelor’s degree in political economy from the State University of New York at Fredonia, conducted post-graduate studies at the University at Buffalo, and earned an MLA in bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania. She is a member of the Penn Wynne Library board, Philadelphia’s International Visitors Council, and the World Affairs Council.

Sally Boucher, CFRE, WealthEngine

Sally Boucher (CFRE) is a Client Service Manager with WealthEngine.  In this capacity, she helps clients with the implementation and utilization of screening results in various fundraising programs.  She was the project director for the WealthEngine report, Best Practices for Prospect Research in Higher Education Fundraising.  Prior to joining WealthEngine, she was Director of Development for the College of Education at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia.  She has also served as Director of Development for The American Shakespeare Center in Staunton Virginia, and as Planned Giving Officer and Development Officer for Sunnyside Presbyterian Retirement Communities.  She is a past president of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP)-Shenandoah Chapter, and co-chair of the 2010 Planning Committee of the Virginia Fund Raising Institute (VFRI). She is a frequent conference speaker  on planned giving, major gifts and prospect research.  Sally lives in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with her husband Phil.  They have two sons in college.

Debra Darling, Washington and Lee University

Deb Darling joined the staff of Washington and Lee University in 2008 as the first Director of Prospect Development to restructure the department and prepare for the next Campaign, currently in its Silent Phase.  Prior to joining W&L, she spent the previous ten years as a major gifts officer for Berea College (KY) and Director of Development for Comfort Zone Camp (VA).  She began her fundraising career at the Thomas Jefferson (Memorial) Foundation in 1988, joined Hampden-Sydney College in 1990 as their first Director of Prospect Development, and later joined the consulting firm, Bentz Whaley Flessner, as its full-time consultant in the area of prospect development.

Pamela Poland, Pamela Poland + Associates

Bringing nearly twenty years of experience in the nonprofit community, Pamela Poland formed the consulting firm Pamela Poland +Associates (PP+A) to assist nonprofits with their abilities to focus and strategize their fundraising efforts around their best prospects.
 
With a background in research for financial services firms on Wall Street, Pamela became involved with the fundraising field after working for the Charles H. Revson Foundation and the philanthropic arm of the Rockefeller family. Her career in fundraising spanned from her first role as assistant director of development for the New York University Medical Center to director of research at The Metropolitan Opera, where she led the prospect development effort for the world's largest performing arts organization. She served as director of development operations for Japan Society in New York and as director of development for Glimmerglass Opera before becoming a fundraising consultant with the Midwest fundraising consulting firm, Bentz Whaley Flessner. There she led the prospect development services for all types of clients including universities, colleges, healthcare organizations, arts and cultural institutions, and organizations focusing on the protection of the environment.
 
Pamela is a recent past president of APRA having led the organization through a transformative management structure change and strategic planning process. She is a frequent speaker and author for APRA, AFP, CARA, MARC, NEDRA, Academic Impressions, and other organizations.

Dave Gallagher, Harvest Fund Raising Counsel & Constellation Advancement LLC

Dave Gallagher is President of Harvest Fund Raising Counsel, a small practice that assists non-profit organizations with major gift development and capital campaigns.  His current and recent clients include: Baruch College, The State University of New York (SUNY), The City University of New York (CUNY), Philadelphia University, Mercy College, Le Moyne College, the New-York Historical Society, New York City Mission Society, the Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Musical Theatre Festival, The College of Management and Academic Studies in Israel, and Butterflies in New Delhi, India.

Before launching Harvest Fund Counsel in 2005, Dave Gallagher served as Vice President for College Advancement at Baruch College in New York City from 2001 to 2005.  At Baruch David he was personally responsible for all College fund raising, marketing and communications, government relations, and alumni relations. During his tenure as VP, he personally solicited and closed gifts of $25 million, $12 million, $10 million, $5 million, and thirteen additional gifts at the $1 million plus range.

Dave supervised The Campaign for Baruch - raising $200 million on a goal of $150 million (through the terms of five College Presidents).  The College also grew its unrestricted annual giving program from $1.2 million in FY 2001 to $4 million in cash in FY 2005 and simultaneously doubled alumni participation from 4% to 9% during the same period (Baruch has 100,000 living alumni). Dave's team increased cash received from $6 million in FY 2001 to $19 million in FY 2006. He also assisted with the marketing and positioning of the College and the rollout of Baruch's branding campaign: The American Dream Still Works.

Before joining Baruch fulltime in 2001, Dave was Vice President at Community Counseling Service Company (CCS), the nation's largest fund raising consulting firm where he enjoyed a long career managing or directing multi-million dollar capital campaigns for numerous clients including: Baruch College, the State University of New York, LeMoyne College, The United Nations Foundation, Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion, Monmouth University, The Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas, The Vatican Observatory, National Center for Disability Services, Keystone College, and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.

Prior to joining CCS, he was Director of Alumni Relations at his alma mater, St. John's University – where he earned both his BA and MA in History.  Dave is teaches fund raising at Baruch College as an adjunct professor.  He serves on the non-profit boards of Butterflies USA, The Rock Ministries of Philadelphia, and Calvary Chapel St. Bernard (Louisiana).

Cindy Progin, Lebanon Valley College

Cindy Progin is the Director of Advancement Research at Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pa., where she has worked for the past 12 years. Prior to joining the development team, she served as an assistant in the College Relations office.  Cindy never even thought about a career in research before accepting her current position in 2004, letting her love of data—and Excel—lead her to the profession.

A member of APRA, Cindy is the current president of PREP/APRA and previously served as the chapter's Communications Director from 2006–2009. She has conducted Excel workshops for the college's Advancement staff and keeps her editing skills up to date by freelancing as a proofreader for her old department. Cindy is a graduate of Lebanon Valley College where she received a degree in English with a concentration in Communications.

Patricia Quigley, University of Rochester

With twenty years of prospect research experience, Patricia Quigley has presented at several APRA chapter and APRA International conferences.  She began her career at the University of Rochester’s central research office in 1993 and, in 1999, became the University Medical Center’s first research analyst  There she developed and implemented all research protocols and procedures for the Center’s advancement office.  Patricia has extensive experience in proactive research, particularly within the medical profession.

Christopher Hubert, University of Virginia

Christopher Hubert has been a development researcher with the University of Virginia since 2006.  Previously, he was a lecturer and adjunct instructor in Russian Language and Literature with James Madison University and the University of Virginia.  Mr. Hubert has served in institutions of higher learning as a lecturer and instructor since 1994, and earned a Ph.D. in Slavic Languages and Literatures from the University of Virginia.

Karen Chacón, Lynchburg College

Karen Chacón is relatively new to the research field, however has extensive experience in non-profit fundraising, event planning and marketing.  Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Karen worked with a number of non-profits throughout the city and served as the Director of Community Relations for Boston City Councilor Michael Ross.  Upon completing her Masters in Organizational Management and Leadership, Karen moved to Lynchburg, Virginia and served as Director of Development for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Virginia.  Karen is currently working on her Masters of Business Administration and serves as the Associate Director of Advancement Services at Lynchburg College in Virginia.
 
Marc E. Keller, Penn

Marc E. Keller, Assistant Director of Prospect Research, has worked in prospect research for the University of Pennsylvania since 2005 and was one of Penn’s delegates to the Mid-Atlantic Research Conference 2009 at Princeton University.  He manages prospect research for Penn’s International Operations and the Institute of Contemporary Art, among other areas of the university.  A graduate of Penn with degrees in Anthropology and Urban Studies, he also publishes short fiction and has been a journalist in Philadelphia and San Diego.  In October 2009, his article, “Prospect Research: The Secret Service,” was published in Philanthropy Journal.

Kathleen M. Sanford, Penn

Kathleen M. Sanford, Prospect Researcher, has worked in prospect research for the University of Pennsylvania since 2007.  She primarily researches prospects for Penn's International Operations and the Institute of Contemporary Art, as well as other areas of the university.  Previously, she worked for an international adoption agency and the American Cancer Society in Texas.  She graduated from the University of Delaware with a degree in English and Political Science.
 
Craig Campbell, Geisinger Health System Foundation

Craig started his career in fundraising as a Development Assistant at United Way of New York City.  After that he worked over two years as an Annual Giving Associate at New York Presbyterian Hospital.  Craig has been working for the past five years as Prospect Researcher at Geisinger Health System Foundation and is currently managing the phone solicitation program on an interim basis.

Mattia Guinivan, Franklin & Marshall College

Tia Guinivan is the Associate Director of Development Information at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, PA.   She has been a prospect researcher in higher education for fourteen years.  She is a member of APRA and PREP/APRA.  She has served PREP/APRA as Membership Chair (2000-2001), Treasurer (2002-2003), and President (2003-2005).  An active volunteer within the field, she mentors new researchers through PREP/APRA and volunteers at MARC conferences.  She has presented for MARC and AFP.  Tia earned a BA in Political Science from Millersville University and a certificate in accounting from Elizabethtown College.

David E. Robertson, Jr., Syracuse

David Robertson has been at Syracuse University for 7+ years. His area of expertise is Data Analytics, utilizing methods such as Data Mining, Forecasting and Predictive Modeling. He has presented at APRA, CASE and NEDRA conferences throughout the US and Canada. David has a BS and MBA from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY where he teaches business and social science statistics as an adjunct professor. A doctoral student in the Social Science Ph.D. Program within the Maxwell School at Syracuse University; his research investigates both formal and informal charitable behavior; specially looking the philanthropic activities of disenfranchised or marginalized populations.
 
Patricia Miller, Penn

Ms. Patricia Miller is Senior Associate Director, Prospect Management at the University of Pennsylvania.  Pat has over 20 years experience as a development professional with Penn's Office of Advancement Research & Analysis in Development & Alumni Relations.  Pat attended Penn’s College of General Studies (CGS) and is a graduate of the Fund Raising Certificate Program  through CGS.   She is a former Co-Instructor, Research Methods for Fundraisers, CGS Program.  In her current role, she provides support for the Prospect Management Committee and the Prospect Management Program, operating in a consultant role to Schools, Centers and Central Development.

Suzanne Barlow, Pace University

Suzanne Barlow is the director of prospect research for Pace University, NY. Previously, she worked with Rutgers University Libraries and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. She earned a certificate in Grantmaking and Fundraising at NYU, an MLIS at Rutgers University and a BA in from Knox College, IL. Today, she studies finance at Pace. Suzanne is on the APRA-GNY board, the Women in Development program committee, and has a NY Non-Profit Meetup Group. This year, she is president of Federal Toastmasters and she enjoys presenting research methods to colleagues at work, CASE, and APRA-GNY.

Armando Zumaya, Center for Public Integrity
 
Armando Zumaya has been in fundraising for 22 years in a variety of roles that have given him a unique perspective on development offices, prospecting and role of research.  He is proudly serving currently as the Chief Development Officer at the Center for Public Integrity. 

He has spent the bulk of his fundraising career as a Major Gift, Leadership Gifts and Annual Fund Officer on two $1+ billion dollar campaigns at Cornell University and the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career in 1985 as a canvasser for SANE/FREEZE in Los Angeles and Ithaca N.Y. where he led door to door canvassers in the field for 5 years.  Most recently he was the Vice President of Development at the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington DC.

He is well known for his work in teaching prospecting, solicitation, cold calling, major gifts techniques and remote constituency fundraising.  He has been a tireless advocate for improving the Prospect Researcher/Fundraiser relationship and creating a prospecting culture inside development teams. He has also spent over a year working as a Senior Consultant for Thomson Financial Wealth ID and has taught numerous development offices how to successfully follow-up on their electronic screenings.

Most notably, he served as the Director of Development at the San Francisco Opera for over 2 years where he directed the refurbishment of their major and planned giving efforts.  He is currently the Director of External Relations at the Springboard Schools.  At Springboard, he is starting a new development team in the new area of K-12 major gifts fundraising.  He lectures at AFP, APRA, CARA Compass Point and Academic Impressions.  He has consulted with a range of clients from small non-profits to major universities especially focused on prospecting, electronic screenings, new donor and board development. 

He lives in Northern Virginia, has a 21 year old daughter and is a proud alumnus of the University of California, Riverside and Roosevelt HS in East Los Angeles.

Tricia Ambler, WealthEngine

Tricia Ambler is a Client Service Manager for WealthEngine and has been in this position since 2007.  Before joining WealthEngine, Tricia worked as the Director of Prospect Research and Tracking at Virginia Commonwealth University where she was responsible for the management of the research office and for prospect tracking.  She has also held development positions at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and the Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation, Inc. in Williamsburg, VA.  Tricia has been involved with APRA-VA serving on the board for six years.
 
She has contributed articles to Connections on Peer Screenings and Finding Private Company Wealth.  In addition, Tricia has been involved with MARC, serving as Conference Chair and Program Chair, and as well as a presenter in 2005 and in 2007She has also presented at the 2008 CASE District III Confererence, the 2009 CASE District V Conference, a the APRA International Conference in 2007 and 2008, and at the AFP International Conference in 2009.

Gregory Duke, Niagara University

Gregory Duke, D.Phil is Senior Research Associate at Niagara University, where he has worked since 2002.  Since 2008 he has also been an Adjunct Professor in the School of Interdisciplinary Studies at Niagara University, teaching a course in fundraising.  Dr. Duke previously worked at Marymount College, Palos Verdes in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and at St. Edmund Hall at Oxford University in Oxford, UK.  He holds a doctorate in British Modern History from Jesus College at Oxford University, and has also studied at Bucknell University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Leeds, and the University of Toronto.

Dr. Duke is currently working on a reporting software program for his department which utilizes pivot tables, VBA and XML programming, and SQL Server language.  He is also interested in data mapping and geographic patterns of giving.  Dr. Duke is one half of “The Research Couple” with his wife Rachel Link, who is Senior Data Analyst at Buffalo State College; the two have a quarterly column in the APRA-UNY newsletter and have recently written an essay for APRA Connections.  They live in Grand Island, NY with their children Jonathan and Laura.

Lara Allen, International Rescue Committee

Lara Allen is currently a research analyst for the International Rescue Committee. She came to the IRC from the American Folk Art Museum and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. Lara was a Maurice Gurin Memorial Scholarship Recipient at the 2006 Fund Raising Day in New York. She holds an MALS from Hollins University and a BA in dance from Scripps College. Lara serves as a junior board member for Urban Pathways and has been active in the fundraising and client committees.

Colleen R. Capodilupo, International Rescue Committee

Colleen R. Capodilupo is a research analyst with the International Rescue Committee. She started her development research career with the Harvard School of Public Health, where she was also an editorial assistant for the Harvard Public Health Review. A graduate of Smith College, Colleen was previously a staff member and course assistant at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab as well as an assistant editor at Blackwell Publishing.

Danalisa J. Radu, Penn

Danalisa J. Radu, Senior Associate Director of Analysis, AdvancementAdvancement Research and Analysis, has worked at Penn for over 10 years.  In her current role, she consults with clients in the Schools, Centers and Central on a wide range of strategic data analysis and predictive modeling projects. She also works with focus groups and survey research. Her career at Penn began at the Wharton School as a reports programmer analyst.  Prior to her current role, Danalisa worked at PENN Medicine Development and Alumni Relations as Manager of Data Analysis supporting both the Health System and the Medical School.

Dr. Robert L. Baer, Penn

Dr. Robert L. Baer, Senior Director, Advancement Research and Analysis has worked in DAR at Penn for over 11 years.  His research has focused on data analysis, predictive modeling, focus groups and survey research.  Just prior to coming to Penn, Bob was a consultant.  He also worked for the DuPont Company for 24 years in a variety of marketing and manufacturing assignments.

Caroline Oblack, WealthEngine

Caroline Oblack, Ed.M. is Director of Client Service at WealthEngine. Caroline’s areas of specialty include best practices in healthcare fundraising and data integration strategies. Prior to WealthEngine, Caroline was a prospect research consultant and also worked in development for the American Red Cross – National Headquarters in Washington, DC and Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation in San Diego, California. Caroline currently serves as President of the Virginia chapter of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA) and is also a member of APRA International and AHP International. Caroline has been a speaker at APRA International Conferences, as well as APRA chapter events, regional events for AHP and AFP, and SITE 2007.

Ben Wyche V
 
Ben Wyche V has worked for a non-profit public policy research foundation in Washington, DC as a prospect research manager since 1999. He is a 1996 University of Pennsylvania graduate. Ben was a research assistant at Penn's Annenberg School for Communication for 4 years. He was also the speaker chair for MARC 2006 at New York University.

Terry Handler, T. Handler Consulting

Terry Handler is Principal of T. Handler Consulting.  He provides consulting services to nonprofit  including higher education, ,national environmental and service organizations, public broadcasting, arts and health care organizations.  He focuses on systems, services, databases, data management and support for development, membership, alumni, and participation programs.  He has extensive knowledge of development, advancement, fundraising and membership programs.

Terry has over 20 years experience and extensive experience with many different types of fundraising systems in all types and sizes of organizations. He has been a Principal at Bentz Whaley Flessner, a Senior Consultant with Marts and Lundy and was a consultant in business technology with CSC, Computer Sciences Corporation.

Terry has been a frequent national speaker at conferences in fundraising and systems.  He has degrees from the University of Oregon and The Ohio State University.  He has served on several arts organization boards.

Deborah Greenberg, Hadassah WZOA

Deborah Greenberg is the Manager of Prospect Research at Hadassah WZOA. She is responsible for researching and identifying prospects and providing support for the National Office and Area Development Centers and evaluating and beta testing software. Prior to joining Hadassah, Deborah spent 5 years as a usability analyst for a major New York software company.
 
Ms Greenberg holds an MA in Industrial Psychology from Temple University. She currently serves on the board of APRA of Greater New York.

Martin O’Donoghue, James Madison University

Martin O’Donoghue is Director of Prospect Research at James Madison University. He manages prospect research and prospect management functions as well as special projects.  Prior to his arrival at JMU, he worked as a researcher and program support in the Development Office of the McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, a product manager at LEXIS NEXIS in Charlottesville, Virginia, and an attorney in Brussels, Belgium specializing in European Competition Law.  He has a B.A. in Economics from Stetson University, J.D. from St. Louis University and MBA James Madison University.

Sarah Parnum Cadbury, La Salle University

Sarah Parnum Cadbury is the Director of Prospect Research at La Salle University. She enjoyed redesigning the University’s prospect management system and she and another researcher are heavily engaged in pro-active research. After working in research at World Wildlife Fund and the National Parks Conservation Association, she appreciates having an alumni base to work from. She was the President of APRA-Metro DC and also served as their Membership Chair. She was Resource Center Co-Chair at the 2002 APRA International Conference, Program Chair for MARC 2003, Volunteer Chair for MARC 2007 and Conference Chair for MARC 2008. Sarah earned a degree in Sociology/Anthropology from Earlham College.
