Ofelia Alayeto has more than 15 years of experience in advancement research and management. Alayeto was a part-time lecturer for 14 years, teaching writing and communications at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She is the author of a scholarly book and many articles in her field. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Italian and French, and a doctorate in comparative literature, from City University of New York.

Ambler, Tricia
Client Services Manager, WealthEngine
Tricia Ambler joined the client service and training team with Wealthengine in October, 2007. In her position with WealthEngine she oversees iimplementation and training for large national nonprofits. Before joining the WealthEngine, she spent almost fifteen years working in different fundraising positions with several different organizations. From 2000 to 2007, Tricia was the Director of Prospect Research and Tracking at Virginia Commonwealth University. While at VCU she helped design and implement a University-wide prospect tracking system and grew the research office from 2 staff members to six supporting 50 university wide gift officers. In this position she helped to identify and research prospects to fund projects affiliated with a $330.5 million campaign, the campaign raised in excess of $400 million. I have also held development positions at Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden in Richmond, VA, working in membership and annual giving. While at Lewis Ginter, Tricia assisted with coordinating annual giving appeals, donor acknowledgements and membership campaigns. While at Jamestown, she helped identify and segment prospects utilizing data from the organization’s first comprehensive donor screening. In addition to Tricia’s research duties she helped plan and staff geographically based cultivation receptions in preparation for the 400th celebration of the founding of Jamestown in 2007.

Melissa Bank Stepno is a consultant with Target Analytics, A Blackbaud Company. In her role there, she was responsible for prospect identification, moves management, database integrity, screening, prospect research and cultivation. Before joining Scottsdale Healthcare, McHugh spent 20 years at the Arizona State University Foundation where she built a sustaining prospect management department that assisted in the success of the ASU Campaign for Leadership, which raised more than $550 million. McHugh is a member of APRA, AHP, AFP, AASP and APRA-Arizona. She is a frequent speaker on the topic of prospect management and research at APRA conferences, virtual seminars and chapter meetings as well as local AFP meetings. She was a member of the APRA Board of Directors for six years and a founding member of the APRA-Arizona chapter. McHugh was the recipient of the 2006 APRA Distinguished Service Award.

Michael Quevli began his career in prospect research in 1996 at AIDS Project Los Angeles. Attending USC’s Keck School of Medicine for seven years, he was responsible for overseeing the Development Research team. In 2005, Quevli joined the Kintera P!N and was the membership chair with the California Advancement Researchers Association for two terms where he increased membership from 165 to 300. He has served on the board of the Laurel Grove Theatre, been a consultant to various nonprofits in Southern California and served three consecutive terms on the Stephens College Alumnae board. David Robertson is Director of Operations Research at Syracuse University. He has been at SU for 7 years. His area of expertise is in data mining with a strong interest in forecasting and predictive modeling. He continues to present statistical methods and modeling at APRA and CASE conferences throughout the US. Robertson has a BS and MBA from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, NY where he teaches statistics and business management strategy as an adjunct professor in the Business Department. He is currently a doctoral student in the Social Science Ph.D. Program within the Maxwell School at Syracuse University. His research examines the unrecognized and informal charitable contributions of the underrepresented; focusing on the philanthropic activities of disenfranchised or marginalized members of society. Currently his doctoral research investigates New York State migrant farmworkers and their charitable contributions within their temporary micro-communities as well as their charitable contributions offered to their ancestral homeland. He utilizes both qualitative and quantitative approaches as well as visual ethnography.

James Rygg, Senior Director of Development Research at the City of Hope since November 2000, has been in the development field since 1992. Rygg served as the President for the California Advancement Researchers Association (CARA) from 2004 to 2006. He has also served as the Programming Chair for CARA’s 2003 Annual Conference, the Southern California Regional Chair from 2000-2002, Membership Chair in 2003 and is also an active member of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA), having served on the Nominations Committee in 2005. In addition, he also served as a Track Co-Chair (2003-2005) for APRA’s International Conference and most recently served on the APRA Curriculum Planning Committee for APRA’s 2009 International Conference and APRA’s Technology Task Force Committee. As of September 1, 2009, Rygg began serving a three year term on the APRA Board of Directors. He currently oversees the prospect research and prospect management areas of Development.
Rygg has presented on various research and development topics at CARA, APRA’s International Conference, the Planned Giving Round Table’s (PGRT) Western Regional, and local Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) chapters. Rygg was also honored to receive the CARA Service Award in 2009.

Chris Sar, CFRE, has over 13 years of experience in prospect research, management, annual giving and capital campaigns. Prior to joining PCH, he worked for nine years in various development positions for Banner Health Foundation. Sar also worked in several other professions and organizations including the World Bank Group in Washington, DC, as a loan officer, publisher of a student newspaper, and as a congressional intern to Senator John McCain. A fifth generation Arizonan, Sar holds a bachelor’s degree from ASU (intercultural communication) and a master’s degree from Thunderbird School of Global Management. He is a past president and board member of APRA-AZ, and a mentor and presenter with other professional organizations including AFP and AHP. Sar is immediate past-president of Tempe South Rotary Club and a graduate of Tempe Leadership Class XVI. A former front-line fundraiser, Rob Scott, member of the APRA Board of Directors, has worked for two decades in the field of higher education fundraising. As a member of the senior development staff, he helps develop, communicate and evaluate institutional fundraising goals and priorities. Armando Zumaya has been in fundraising for 22 years. He is currently serving proudly as the Senior Director of Development at the Center for Public Integrity. He has spent much of his fundraising career as a major gift, leadership gifts and annual fund officer on two more-than-$1-billion campaigns at Cornell University and the University of California, Berkeley. He began his career in 1985 as a canvasser for SANE/FREEZE in Los Angeles and Ithaca, New York, where he led door-to-door canvassers in the field for five years. Most recently he was the Vice President of Development at the Children’s Defense Fund in Washington, D.C. Zumaya is well known for his work in teaching prospecting, solicitation, cold calling, major gifts techniques and remote constituency fundraising. He has been a tireless advocate for improving the Prospect Researcher/Fundraiser relationship and creating a prospecting culture inside development teams. Most notably, he served as the Director of Development at the San Francisco Opera for more than two years where he directed the refurbishment of their major and planned giving efforts. He was also the director of external relations at the Springboard Schools. At Springboard, he started a new development team in the new area of K-12 major gifts fundraising. He lectures at AFP, APRA, CARA Compass Point and Academic Impressions, AFP International, Blackbaud, and more.
