Opening Address – Wednesday 1:30pm - 2:00pm ET
Pamela Poland, Pamela Poland + Associates
We strive for success in our personal lives, our professional careers, and in our every day events and tasks.
Those most renowned for their success – such as Bill Gates – are described as having a combination of talent and ability, as well as a history filled with a specific set of opportunities. While we may never have the talent, ability, and the particular opportunities that set Bill Gates apart from the rest of the population, there are ways in which we can foster and increase our own opportunities to expand our positive impact.
Sure to be a dynamic discussion, our opening address will focus on ways in which we might capitalize on the opportunities we have and to generate new ones as a way toward building success and maximizing our impact personally, professionally, and within our institutional settings.
Session 1 Breakouts – Wednesday 2:15pm -3:30pm ET
New to Research: Things You Should Know
Cindy Progin, PREP/APRA
A prospect researcher wears many hats especially those working in one-shop offices. In addition to investigating the propensity and capacity for people to give to a specific organization, researchers have to learn how to document their work, create reports, and sometimes "sell" the importance of research to the gift officers with whom we work. This workshop will focus on tips for new researchers, especially those working in one-shop offices.
Elite MDs and PhDs: Where and How to Find Them
Patricia Quigley, APRA-Upstate New York
Where do doctors go who want to make the really big money? What are the top paying specialty areas? What alternative careers have MDs and PhDs chosen for greater financial security? In this session you'll learn how to mine your database by searching for specialties and dual degree alums (a fast-growing trend) with a high probability of higher salaries and/or stock ownership. We will also explore which industries are luring doctors and PhDs and how to estimate their salaries.
Creating Better Relationships with Development Officers
Christopher Hubert, APRA-Virginia
This presentation is based on over a year of meeting with development officers face-to-face in an effort to make prospect research more effective for officers. We will discuss strategies to improve communication between development officers and prospect researchers, methods to return research to development officers more effectively, and the pitfalls that may arise from implementing these strategies.

In this session, you will see examples of basic tools and processes you can create and implement to help you get the most out of your research and prospect management.
International Prospect Research: Tools and Techniques
Marc E. Keller, Penn
Kathleen M. Sanford, Penn
International alumni and parents are becoming an increasing presence in the prospect pools of both large and smaller universities. However, international prospect research is distinctly different than domestic prospect research. This presentation will discuss basic research strategy for non-U.S. prospects, and will highlight the techniques and tools of international prospect research, focusing on the “Big Three”: UK, China, and India, as well as research techniques for Russia, Qatar, The Philippines, Singapore and other countries.
How to be a MVP in your Office
Craig Campbell, PREP/APRA
How do you keep your career moving and show your worth in an environment of staff and budget cuts? You have a lot to offer and can grow and do more for your organization if you are willing to think hard and work with management to meet pressing business needs.
