Past and Present
APRA is the premier international organization for fundraisers who specialize in research and information management. The association grew out of the Minnesota Prospect Research Association and quickly became a national organization as researchers across the country joined to attend APRA's first conference in September 1988. Today, APRA represents more than 2,500 development professionals around the world who are dedicated to empowering the nonprofit community by meeting its data and information needs.
Mission/Strategic Initiatives
APRA serves and educates fundraising professionals interested in advancement research and promotes that profession. APRA's primary initiatives are to produce quality information resources and facilitate knowledge sharing; to define and advocate the highest standards of performance and ethical behavior; to produce and promote superior educational opportunities and materials; to represent the advancement research profession to external constituencies; to increase, cultivate and maintain a diverse membership; and to evolve APRA's mission and structure.
Member Profile
APRA members are predominantly college-educated females between the ages of 25 and 54. About 51 percent have a bachelor's degree; 33 percent have an advanced degree. They primarily work in higher education institutions, healthcare organizations, cultural and arts organizations, K-12 institutions, environmental/wildlife, human services and religious organizations. About 39 percent of members have more than five years of experience in the advancement research field; 55 percent have more than five years of experience in charitable fundraising.
Organizational Structure and Leadership
A 12-member Board of Directors elected by the membership governs APRA. The Board is further divided into an Executive Committee and functional teams. APRA has 29 regional chapters in the U.S. and Canada. Chapters also elect leaders to oversee their activities.
