Portfolio size, or the number of prospects a fundraiser carries in their portfolio, is currently a hot topic in development. Many organizations are asking questions such as if there is an ideal number of prospects in a portfolio and if there is an ideal time a prospect should remain in a portfolio. The University of South Carolina started a comprehensive portfolio review and consultation program in 2015; this presentation will cover the details of the project, what we learned during and after the project, how the project changed some of our business practices and how we moved forward with regularly scheduled reviews. We will also discuss how we are using the results to help the fundraisers plan future cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies. Our objective is to provide an overview of the project and our lessons learned in hopes of assisting other organizations as they plan a portfolio consultation and review project.
