102: GeoVisualization on the Cheap: Exploring Prospect Pools with Excel 3D Maps

Track: Prospect Research

Session Number: 102
Date: Wed, Jul 26th, 2017
Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM

Description:

Mapping data makes it easier to see trends, discover pockets of untapped donor potential, inform fundraising strategy, and maximize fundraising travel dollars. But data visualization software can be expensive and intimidating to learn.
This session will introduce the 3D Maps feature in Microsoft Excel 2016 and Office 365 and provide a hands-on, step-by-step process for transforming a spreadsheet of prospect data into an interactive map in minutes. Attendees will learn how adding capacity ratings, giving history and biographical data can create robust maps appropriate for proactive prospecting, as well as event and trip planning.
The presenters will share their experiences introducing mapping to fundraisers and leadership and offer strategies for incorporating geovisualization into research products.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own data files to work with, but sample data will also be available.
Please Note: The 3D Maps feature is only available on Windows-based versions of Microsoft Excel 2016 and Office 365.
