Description:

Prospect researchers can discover a lot of data through publicly available resources, but what about information that is not so public, like stock, bonds, private equity, hedge funds, and retirement funds? Much of a prospect’s wealth may lie here, but the presence of these assets may only be discovered through direct contact with prospects and how can gift officers gather this data if they are not well-versed in these concepts? This presentation discusses how Johns Hopkins University’s Office of Development Research created "A Guide to Better Understand Your Prospects’ Finances" to help fill this knowledge gap. The presenter will explain how the guide and supplementary class were created, how the guide can be used to develop more accurate gift capacity ratings, and how the Office of Development Research improved its relationship with gift officers while also filling a knowledge gap about investments and other financial concepts on both teams.
