Grateful Scholars: Do High-Achieving Alumni Give Back?

Every educational institution produces alumni with a track record of stellar academic achievement. Does high academic performance translate to higher levels of giving participation? And would alumni who received scholarships and student awards have an even higher level of affinity than their peers out of a sense of gratitude to the institution?

A case study of how Vanderbilt University used the Grateful Patient model to explore these aspects of affinity and participation among its brightest students will be presented. Approaches to identifying alumni, as well as to analyzing the data, will be discussed, as will the study’s findings. The session will include group discussion of the results of the study, of other approaches to analyzing data sets of this type and of how to engage and solicit high-achieving alumni.
