The Power of Partnering with Your Archives for Prospect Research

Track: Prospect Research

Session Number: 6002
Date: Wed, Jul 27th, 2022
Time: 10:30 AM - 11:45 AM
Room: International 7

Description:

It's time to consider your archives as a tool for prospect research and communication. What your archives hold onto—and also, notably, what they don't—can help inform your knowledge of your institution, no matter its age. Your archives can answer some specific research questions, such as: who’s the best person to reach out to a long-shot prospect and why; what that major gift donor looked like way back when (and whether they’d appreciate a photo of their long-ago selves for stewardship); what they were involved in and how that led them to where they are; and what they might be interested in giving to now. But the documents in your archives also ask and answer some deeper questions: what were the founding principles and aims of your institution? Are they still valid today? Are there issues that appeared early on that still happen? Why? We’ll talk about how many of the same documents you can use for historical research can also help you consider the purpose of upcoming campaigns, and the purpose of what you do, and how to communicate that to major donors.
